Leading Lines

Keith Wilbur is our guest photographer today. All images are by Keith who has a natural eye for photography. Check out more of his photos using the link below. Thank you, Keith, for allowing me to use your images in my post.

Today's post discusses leading lines, another form of photographic composition.

Below, the sun forms a line on the water drawing us into the image, straight to the dock, mountains and clouds. Our eyes are lifted up into the photo to a beautiful view.

The shape and direction of strong lines create powerful images. The lines created by the rise and fall of rolling hills or tanned bodies lying on the beach are sensuous. Tall buildings or columns, stair steps or bridges are stable and formal.

There are many different types of lines we can use in our photographic compositions: straight, diagonal, curvy, zigzag, and circular. Each can be used to improve our photo's composition.

Below, the pylons lead our eye into the photo, through the fog to the sailboat moored in the distance.

Looking at a photo containing strong lines naturally draws our eye along them. Think about how you place lines in your photo and you can affect the way the image is seen. The viewer can be pulled toward the subject, through the scene or into the picture.

Lines pulling us diagonally from the corners of the photo make a strong composition.

One of the most common and graceful lines used in composition is called the S curve. Below the river forms an S curve and draws our eye to the truck on the highway.

The undulating lines of the country road draw the eye into the image. The road disappears around a bend into the trees inviting us in.

Lines have many uses in a photograph. They can unify, divide, or accent a composition. If they are interesting enough, they can become the subject of the image themselves.

I love your photo...all the diverging lines leading the viewer's eye to the city skyline are great. Would you like to submit photos for one of my posts? I'm sure Keith will appreciate your compliment. He'll be reading the comments.  I love #3 and #4.

Lovely pictures and the lines do attract or distract from the pictures when used specifically.

Some amazing pictures from Keith! He sure has a natural eye for photography. My favorite is the second from the last. Checked his flicker album and he has some fantastic collections.

Sailor - Keith is self-taught and does a fantastic job with his photography. I never get tired of looking at his images! He'll see all the comments and I know he'll be pleased people like his work.  The photo you like was taken on Highway 101, near the coast, in California. That area is gorgeous.

Mari Sterling Wilbur said...

Thank you from Keith and I both. What a cute little guy in your photo. You're using the "line" of his tail as a diagonal line to lead us into your photo and to this little guys face. Excellent!

Mari Sterling Wilbur said...

Thank you from Keith and I. I'd love to have you as a guest photographer, Melissa. If you're interested let me know and we can chose a subject like street photography, candid photography or portraits. I know from your Facebook that you seem to like those subjects. Your sister and you can be guest photographers together if you want. I especially love your photo of her and you photo of the woman sitting on the sidewalk.

Mari Sterling Wilbur said...

Yes, it's all about thinking and planning your photos before you snap the photo.

Hi Mari...now I understand why you thought my photo from my Friday Moment fit in with the topic of the post!  =)

As promised here is the photo that you asked that I upload.  =)

You are more than welcome to use any of my pictures you would like for a post if you think anything I have would work for a lesson.  Since I am basically teaching myself by pointing, shooting, and practicing (and reading your posts), I don't know that there's enough for you to use for a post, but you are welcome to borrow them if you'd like.  =)

Mari Sterling Wilbur said...

I'd love to use some of your photos. I post once a week - usually on Saturday. I can use photos from 2 or 3 people in one post and credit each person if I don't have enough from just one person.

Love the images, the lines certainly add beauty to the photos!! Hard to choose a fave from the pics but I'd probably select #4 if forced to pick one, it captures my attention and doesn't let go. The tips using lines is very helpful and something all photographers should remember as Keith's pics surely show. Nice post!!

Mari, I’ve been meaning to tell you that you are now my
16-year-old daughter’s mentor.   She is announcing
to everyone that Mari Sterling Wilbur is her online photography
instructor.    You will be hearing from
her as soon as she winds a few things up with her State Congress presentation.  And who knows, she may even submit a few photographs
of her own to you.   In the meantime she’s
seriously studying your site and learning.
Thank you for providing this opportunity.

Also wanted to talk to you about the offer you made awhile
back of photo sharing.   I’m very
interested in seeing these.

Hey...I just visited visited your art store and it is really fantastic. My wife usually send paintings and photos as birthday gifts to her family and friends back in the US and I am not sure which site she uses. They all love to get Indian gifts and we have shipped many gifts from India and at the end shipping charges exceed the actual gift charge. Thats why she orders online. I will refer your work to my wife if she plans to send any more gifts.

I also noticed that if I right click on your images in your store I can download it and you have no watermarks to protect your property from free downloading. So how do you protect it? I am just curious.

Mari Sterling Wilbur said...

I had a watermark on my photos on RedBubble. Unfortunately the only place to put it was across the middle. I understand I can now place it in the corner. Thanks for the reminder - I will go do that now. I also didn't realize you could right click on those images and download them. That is something new. I need to start adding a watermark to all my blog photos. :D I would be very honored to have you wife order my photos. Let me know if there is anything in particular she likes.
