A Digital Art Kinda' Day

I love creating digital art and tend to use bright vivid colors, often with a soft glowing look. With the various photo-editing software packages on the market there are all styles of digital art you can make, just pick your favorite.

Digital Art "The Twins"

The above art was created using several colored layers placed over the original photo. I added a very soft glow which softened the overall look of the art.

Original photograph of "The Twins"

The alterations to the original photograph are not drastic but I love the colors of the layers and the softness - to me the digital art says "spring is here".

Pick your favorite style of altered photographic art: mixed-media, photo manipulation, layering, texturing, montage or collage. And that's just the beginning of what's available. Any one software package can make most of the digital art I mentioned.

Software prices range from free (Gimp - download off line) to Picnik (about $25 a year) and the various Photo Shop programs. If you use Flickr to store your photos there are Flickr groups for all of these software packages which offer support and answer specific questions. A couple of Google searches will bring up lots of information.

You can learn to make your own layers and textures or find them free online.  Flickr has several groups offering free textures but be sure you understand the copyright licensing of each texture.  My Amazon Search Tool (in the right hand column of my blog) will assist you in finding books on photography, digital art, cameras and camera gear.

I'll be posting more digital art in the coming days and weeks with more information. I hope you like my work.

hmmm... layering of colors could seem pretty heavy for me... but what you wrote about spring gave the digital art you did a touch of mari wilbur ;)...perhaps what i wanted to see is a sharpening of colors, what you offered me instead is a soft glow... :)... and that's wonderful mari... i have to learn that :)... thanks for the tips :)

That is so beautiful. It's amazing how you can tweak a photo and make it look different.I am always looking for pictures to put in my blogs. This is very informative, maybe I can learn how to do it myself.

@Melissa - spring reminds me of the softness of rebirth in nature which is probably why I use the dewy glow; summer to me is vivid and bright with wildly colored flowers all over my garden.

I think what's important in art is to find your own voice :D

@Jenni - I'll be giving some specific tips on digital art down the road a bit. Meantime I'll go visit and blog and send you a message with some tips you might like :D

Amazing how a little tweak puts a spin on the photo, makes the pic seem so different. Wasn't aware of the various programs available, thanks for the tips!!

Hi, Mari! Both are beautiful photos but for me, the difference in the colors is drastic. It is amazing what technology can do!

It looks almost like a watercolor pastel... breathtaking beauty here. Love the dewy glow of spring... This I will pass along to a couple of amateur photography friends who are seriously interested in learning more camera magic.

Fabulous photo's Mari. I use Gimp too. I use Linux as my preferred platform on my PC. I'm not so keen on MS Windows.
I like to take photo's too. Anything with the sun reflecting inspires me.

hi mari, this is another great lesson to learn- soft effects the artistic way..like your "twins" here...soft yet the details are still very visible, like the velvety/hairy surface of the leaves

beautiful transformation of the photograph and I think it is invaluable for any photographer to have the skills of editing a photo.

Gorgeous photo! I use Picnik quite a lot for the blog, it's a great free package.

@Mommy@Bod - it is a great package, easy to use too. If you have a Flickr account you can find lots of free layers and textures to use also-just check the copyright as they can't be used for sale or commercial work. I prefer to make my own layers and textures since I sell lots of my work at RedBubble.

I am not sure why, but I like these two pictures most.

@Sailor: the original photo was taken in my yard, then I went to work on it in my editing software. Several layers and textures later I had the photo manipulated version.

They both scream "spring" to me!

Thank you for your comment.
